Have blog? Need post. What’s an uninspired lawyer to do?

by Barbara Nelson

Sometimes you must update your blog, but can’t come up with a topic and your “blog ideas” file is empty.

  1. Leverage other material. Given a presentation? Written an article? Update the material, summarize it, or target it to a different audience.
  2. Pick up the phone and call a client or someone involved in your client’s world. What’s going on? What do they care about today?
  3. Read a publication or go to a site that your clients use.
  4. Open the paper, look at a magazine rack, the best seller list. How can you tie what you know to current events?
  5. Write about a trend or future possibility.
  6. Think of the top 5 questions that people always ask you- turn them into 5 posts.
  7. Take the top 5 mistakes that your clients make- turn them into 5 posts.
  8. Use the top 5 things that your clients think are true, but they aren’t.
  9. What are the top 5 questions you ask clients or prospects? Is there a quick checklist that would be helpful?
  10. Write about any key decisions your clients will need to make.
  11. Write about an article, blog or any other resource; tell your audience why they need to know or what they need to do related to the topic.
  12. Cruise your archives. Any updates? Can you repost one as a “most requested” repeat? Can you rework one?
  13. Ask a question, what do you want to know about your prospects and clients?

Without question, blogs need to add value.  No doubt that some posts and topics are “better” or more inspired than others. As long as your blog is regularly valuable to your clients- don’t miss a scheduled post because you can’t come up with the perfect topic.

What do YOU do when you just can’t think of something to write about- and you want to post?  What have you learned from experience or experts? Let me know. I need to know!

Note: this post comes from a conversation I had with a group of lawyers. My target audience. Refer to #2 above. Thanks guys!
