Disaster preparation- just do it

by Barbara Nelson

- or what I learned from the Nor’Easter this week…

Disaster recovery is a well-beaten horse since Katrina, so hopefully you’re well-prepared and scoff at this entry.  If not- then please get serious about your disaster response & recovery planning. Conduct a risk analysis to see what emergencies are most likely, and use them to drive your planning. Scenario planning is a tool most corporations use.

Ah-ha!A Michael Gerber moment…CEO, Manager, Marketeer, A new role for you to handle- Disaster Recovery Dude- block time on your calendar to get it done.

There are a wealth of disaster response and recovery resources for attorneys available through the ABA, other legal publications & lots of practice advisors. Google it. They will save you time and hassle.

Here’s a link to a free pdf report on disaster planning for law firms from the practicepro.ca website.  It’s very clear and simple. (the booklet, not the url. The url is long and ugly. However, if I wait  to post this until I figure out how to rename the url and make it pretty– well, by then we could have a whole new disaster!)

Use what’s already been done. If you have a terrific resource, please include it in a comment on this post.

Final thought: This is a really big deal. Grandma was right, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. If you don’t have plans & backup systems in place- if you have them but your staff doesn’t know about them or if you never update the plans- you’re taking on more risk than your practice can handle. (there is a word for this, and it’s not “smart”)
